Chinchilla Info
Basic Care
Chinchillas require a diet of chinchilla pellets, hay, and fresh water. Treats may be offered in moderation. Some favorite chin treats are raisins, dried papaya, rose hips and calcium sticks. Chinchillas require a dustbath at least twice weekly. They need large cages with many levels and most chins like exercise wheels. Chins should be allowed to have a daily free run but you must ALWAYS supervise them. You should clean their cage about once a week - kiln-dried pine bedding is suitable, aspen is better, and Carefresh is best. NEVER use cedar chips! Check out my links page for places to buy chin supplies and feed.

Important Things to Remember

-Chinchillas chew almost everything! including electrical wires, furniture and shoes! You should try to "chinchilla-proof" your house to make it the best and safest place for the chin to live.
-Chinchillas are a mature pet. They require a lot of care and attention. I do not recommend chinchillas to children under the age of twelve.
-Chinchillas prefer cooler temperatures (they have a heavy fur coat, you know!) Around 70 degrees is good. They do not tolerate humidity so they must be in an air-conditioned space during the summer.
-Things such as dogs, cats, loud noises and young children can stress out a chinchilla and cause it to be very unhappy and mean. You must exercise caution when bringing a chinchilla into a home that may have any of these things.

"PLEASE NOTE, BEFORE YOU BUY!
Chinchillas may look like a huggable lap pet but MOST will NOT sit still to be cuddled and held. Especially
young chins, their energy level and attention span is comparable to that of a small child. The majority of IPCR rescue/ re-homing cases come about as a result of this misconception! "

Chin Habits/Behaviors

-Chinchillas usually prefer to be in pairs but as long as your chin gets enough attention from you he/she should be okay alone.
-Chinchillas like to play. Give them wood toys to play with and chew on(check out the link to Pet Chinchilla Toys below. They make some of the best chinchilla toys that I have found) and an exercise wheel. A bored chinchilla will soon become unfriendly and unhappy.
-Chins are nocturnal and they do make noise at night. It is not a good idea to put the chin cage in your bedroom unless you think that the noise will not bother you.
